Kratenberg: He once threw shoes at Mourinho over a dispute. He used to be very charming but he changed if he didn t succeed.
Former Premier League referee Kratenberg revealed that he had a dispute with then Manchester United coach Mourinho and threw his sneakers at Mourinho. Kratenberg believes Mourinho was charming in the early days, but changed when he wasn't that successful.
Clattenberg said on the Post's podcast "The Whistleblower": "He thought I missed the handball from Stoke City defender Ryan Shockros. He insisted that it should be a penalty and asked, 'Did you watch the replay?' He said he watched it, and I angrily threw my shoes in his direction. Of course I didn't hit him, he was pale and didn't know what to say, and then left the locker room."
"When I got home and watched the replay of the incident, I found that the ball didn't hit the hand. It was all mental games, resentment and malice. In the end, my relationship with Mourinho was far less than what he was when he was at Chelsea. He was charming and everyone loved him and called him the 'special one'."
Clattenberg also recalled how Mourinho tried to influence the referee more than 20 years ago when he first arrived in England. He said: "I remember his initial comments on me, I enforced his early game, he was always full of charm, always saying how good the referee was, always trying to get that advantage."
"I remember going to Real Madrid once, when he was suspended for a game, he sent a message to my hotel, wishing me all the best. There was always that charm, there was always something behind it."
"But when he was not that successful, he changed a lot. In Turkey, he became very angry and was fighting the referee. He no longer seemed to have that charm, maybe because he didn't win."
